Speak Dutch with confidence. (Even if you’re not perfect!)

Are you learning Dutch and want to speak more fluently? Maybe you’ve studied the grammar, learned the vocabulary, and done your Duolingo streak, but when it’s time to actually speak… your mind goes blank. Or your voice gets small.

You’re not alone. Many Dutch learners feel anxious about speaking because they’re afraid of making mistakes, sounding silly, or being misunderstood. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to speak perfectly to speak clearly and confidently. In this blog, you’ll find practical and encouraging tips to help you feel more comfortable speaking Dutch, whether you’re a beginner or already intermediate.

Start practicing for 5 minutes every day

You don’t need to study for hours. Just 5 focused minutes a day can help your brain stay connected to the Dutch language. Here are some ideas:

  • Repeat 5 new words out loud, start easy and add difficult words as you feel more confident

  • Listen to 2 minutes of a Dutch podcast. The Kinderpodcast is a great way to start!

  • Read one short sentence from a children’s book. Jip en Janneke is a must-read for soon to be Dutchies!

  • Talk to yourself in Dutch while making tea

Start speaking out loud

Want to get better at speaking? Then speak out loud. Even if you’re alone, say words and sentences out loud. Repeat what you hear in Dutch videos, podcasts, or even on the street. This technique is called shadowing and it’s one of the most powerful ways to train your mouth, ears, and memory. Don’t worry if you don’t get it perfect. What matters is that you’re using your voice. Start in the supermarket, or go to a weekend market and buy different kind of vegetables or flowers, we are sure you’re speaking in now time!

Start small

You don’t need to sound like the newsreader on NOS Journaal. Start with useful phrases you’ll actually need in daily life, like:

“Mag ik een koffie, alstublieft?”
“Waar is het station?”
“Ik spreek nog niet zo goed Nederlands.”

Speak with real people

The best way to overcome fear is to practise in a relaxed, friendly setting, where it’s OK to make mistakes. At 24Speaking, we offer online Dutch conversation lessons with real tutors who understand the challenges of speaking a new language. You’ll build confidence through everyday conversations, get gentle corrections, and finally use the Dutch you’ve learned!
